Do You Still Believe?
© 2017 Bret Hesla
Do you still believe in the prayers your mother taught you?
In the liturgies through the ages handed down?
Do you still believe in the tools your father left you?
Do you trust the stream of time?
In the stream of time
In the stream of time
God has promised to be there
See what God has done
See what God has done
Bring your grateful hearts in prayer
Do you still believe in the challenges of Jesus?
In the hammering of the theses on the door?
Do you still believe when old tenets are dismantled?
Do you trust the winds of change?
In the winds of change
In the winds of change
God has promised to be there
See what God has done
See what God has done
Bring your grateful hearts in prayer
Do you still believe when the workers are not working?
When the hunger lasts and the answers can’t be found?
Do you still believe though the future is uncertain?
Do you trust the rains of doubt?
In the rains of doubt
In the rains of doubt
God has promised to be there
See what God has done
See what God has done
Bring your grateful hearts in prayer
Do you still believe in the stream upon the prairie?
In the rain that falls, in the wind that sweeps the plain?
Do you still believe that the green will follow fire?
Do you trust this living land?
In the living land
In the living land
God has promised to be there
See what God has done
See what God has done
Bring your grateful hearts in prayer.

Not long after my father died, fellow church member Jim Herrick told me that every Sunday when they gathered for choir, my dad would ask him, straight faced, “Jim, do you still believe?” I’ve assumed it was his dry sense of humor, but who knows. Anyway, I’ve taken that for the title, and gone from there. Thanks Jim.
