[January 11, 2026) I wrote this song this morning, after a week of intense ICE agent brutality, raids, abductions, and murder in MInneapolis. The depths of Republican sponsorsed cruelty and willingness to ignore the law to threaten immigrants and people of color is really appalling. But the resistance is strong. As my brother said earlier this week, we’re in the fight of our lives … for a kind, connected, beautiful world.
A friend forwarded me a Muslim newsfeed article from last weekend, which quoted Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison:
As Attorney General Keith Ellison said to me in an interview later Saturday, Trump is targeting Minnesota because “everything he stands for is the opposite of what we stand for. … Minnesota is facing persecution from the federal government because we’re inclusive, because we seek shared prosperity, because we stand up for the rights of people, because we welcome the stranger – and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Ellison said.
Performance tips:
It’s nice to have a relevant song in your pocket when people feel the need to sing something. We sang this song in church today without passing out lyric sheets. It has tons of repetition and is a super familiar tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic, Solidarity Forever, etc. Just line out each verse, then off you all go. It was easy to teach, and someone instantly came up with a new verse! The healing power of strong group singing was wonderful. I hope you can find a place to sing this in your group, wherever you find yourself. Add the verses you need. In the end, love will prevail!
