If You’re Lonely Buy a Songbook
1. If you’re lonely buy a songbook
Especially one where you don’t know the songs
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And everywhere you go bring it along
You’re sure to find some people you can show it to
And chances are that they can teach a song to you
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And pretty soon your repertoire will grow.
2. If you’re lonely buy a songbook
Then go and buy another twenty two.
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And plan a little singing rendezvous
Get shoulder next to shoulder in a tiny space
And revel in exuberant, unpolished ways
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And pretty soon your repertoire will grow.
3. Release the lovely bird that’s living in your heart
Don’t cede the joy of singing to the singing stars
Eventually you’ll memorize a song or two
Forget-me-nots that beautify a blooming you
4. If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And voyage out upon the rolling sea
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And feel someone’s yearning to be free
By marinating in another time and place
You sweeten your affection for the human race
If you’re lonely buy a songbook
And pretty soon your repertoire will grow.
When I bought the Rise Up Singing book in the late 80s, I knew about 5% of the songs. By 2015 I knew about 85%. For most of those songs, I can tell you who I learned it from. The book became a record of my life and friendships.
